Fire & Safety Inspections

  • Many of our clients employ Assurance Fire Consulting to complete their monthly building and facility routine checks, which ensure that their building’s fire protection systems and safety measures are functioning properly, that they remain compliant with regulations, and to ensure their COR (Certificate of Recognition) requirements are maintained. Key elements of these inspections typically include:

    1. Fire Alarm and Detection Systems: Test smoke and heat detectors (visual check; functional tests may be quarterly). Ensure fire alarm panels show no faults. Check emergency notification devices (sirens, strobes).

    2. Fire Suppression Systems: Inspect fire extinguishers for charge, accessibility, and proper labeling. Check fire hoses and cabinets for readiness. Visually inspect sprinkler heads and valves for damage or obstructions.

    3. Exits and Evacuation Routes: Confirm exit signs are illuminated and clearly visible. Ensure exit doors are unobstructed and functioning. Check emergency lighting along egress paths.

    4. Fire Doors and Barriers: Inspect fire doors for proper closure and latching. Ensure no objects block fire-rated walls or doors.

    5. Hazardous Materials and Storage Areas: Verify safe storage of flammable or combustible materials. Check that hazardous areas have proper signage and access control.

    6. Housekeeping and General Safety: Remove potential fire hazards (clutter, trash, combustible materials near heat sources).Inspect electrical panels for visible issues (burn marks, improper storage).

    7. Documentation and Reporting: Record all inspections, findings, and corrective actions. Schedule repairs or maintenance for any deficiencies found.

Design & Functionality Consultation

  • We work directly with building owners, architects, construction supervisors, and project managers to develop cost-effective fire safety solutions that meet the intent of the National Fire Code – Alberta Edition (NFC(AE)). By integrating safety, compliance, and functionality early in the design or renovation process, we help ensure your building is safe, efficient, and code-compliant without unnecessary expenses.

  • This is achieved by reviewing architectural and construction drawings and conducting on-site inspections, ensuring projects are completed on time, cost-effectively, and in full compliance with fire safety regulations. By working collaboratively from the early stages, we help ensure projects progress smoothly, avoiding costly delays and ensuring fire safety requirements are seamlessly integrated.

Fire Safety Plans

  • When Are Fire Safety Plans Required?

While many businesses and property owners have an all-encompassing emergency plan that may include natural disasters, bomb threats, and active shooter etc., the National Fire Code – 2023 Alberta Edition (NFC(AE)) specifically addresses fire emergencies. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure a fire safety plan is prepared and in place.

The NFC(AE) states that fire safety plans (i.e. fire emergency procedures) are required for:

    • every building containing an assembly, care, treatment or detention occupancy,

    • every building required by the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition (NBC(AE))to have a fire alarm system,

    • demolition and construction sites,

    • storage areas required to have a fire safety plan – indoor storage, outdoor storage and outdoor storage of tires,
